Hello Families,

Lots of amazing learning has been happening in room 13. I hope that much of the information has made its way home already. 

We have continued to work on our printing practice when writing using visuals to help us remember our spaghetti and meatball spacing as well as our sky, grass, dirt letters. We have also been extending our writing by using who, what, where and when each week!

We learned about nouns and action verbs this week and brainstormed lists together as a class. We then picked a few words to write sentences with. 





We have been enjoying a game each day called Spellie! It is amazing to hear the words the students come up with to try to solve the mystery word. If you choose to try this at home, please try not to do it before school during the week so that we can all try together in class.

In math, we have been working on addition and addition word problems. The students are learning how to pick out words in the problem to help them know how to solve the problem such as: sum, in total or all together. 

We are also learning many new math games. One is called Face Off Shake Up to practice comparing numbers quickly while working with a partner.


February is Health Heart Month! In gym we are tracking how many times we can complete 100 reps of warm up activities each time we have gym. Ask your child what their favourite warm-up is so far and try it together (sorry if they say burpees!).

Valentine's Day and 100th Day of School

In lieu of exchanging Valentine cards from home, Room 13 will be creating a card for their Secret Valentine in our class. We will be creating these cards at school on Monday to hand out on Tuesday. Less work for parents and less paper too! We will be celebrating Valentine's day with various educational activities on Tuesday and please remember that treats should not be brought to share with the class. 

100th Day of school falls on the same day as our Family Dance! We are looking forward to celebrating this day as well. Stay tuned for more information on Monday as we will discuss as a class if we would like to dress up on theme or not.

Volunteering
Let me know if you are interested in volunteering as a reading volunteer in the classroom on a regular basis and I can send some information your way! Please send me an email if you're available to help out!

 Hello Families, We had the amazing opportunity to have HAWKS land in our field on Monday. We watched the landing, asked questions, sketched and then watched the helicopter take off! What a great way to start the week. In Science, we have continued our learning about different animals, focusing on what they each, where they live, what they look like and finding out interesting facts. The students have begun to create their own booklets or posters to share their information gathered with their peers. In Math, we have been focusing on shapes and being able to describe their attributes. The students created Wanted posters to share their knowledge of 2D shapes and 3D objects. With the new Wellness Curriculum, we discussed Boundaries and how to communicate them as well as who is in our Relationship circles as Family, friends and acquaintances in our lives.  Hello Families, 30 x 30 Outdoor Challenge We continued to enjoy our time outside this week. Whether is was with our grade 3 buddies or on our own, we were able to get outside every day! We even cleaned up the perimeter of the field one morning. We will continue to be going outside everyday. We do ask you to put sunscreen or bug spray on your child before they come to school. If you are sending it for them to put on, please ensure they know how to do it themselves and that they know not to share with others. Thank you! Math Fractions have been a big part of our lessons these past two weeks and wow, did the students ever pick up on what a fraction was! Learning terms such as numerator, denominator, whole, part, partition, equal and unequal helped them complete their pizza fractions and name fractions with ease! Here are a few examples.   Hello families! We had a great start to the school year this week! Students enjoyed getting to know each other and slowly getting back into the routine of school. We learned a lot about classroom routines and materials and are easing into school work. Students enjoyed some reading time, playing games in the gym, building and free choice time on Friday. Soft Entry On Tuesday, teachers will be outside to meet students in the morning from 8:00-8:10. Starting on Wednesday morning, we will begin our soft entry in the morning. When students arrive at school they will come in the doors near the garden and will make their way down to the classroom. Doors will be open from 8:00-8:10. Students will be engaged in a morning activity and instructional time will begin at 8:10am.
