Move-ember

Move-ember November is movement month at LBS! We are encouraging students to be active throughout the winter with a movement challenge for move-ember :).   Students are encouraged to keep track of their movement minutes outside of school time from November 1-30. The class that earns the most movement minutes at the end of the month will earn a special reward! Please support your child in tracking their movement minutes - a form will be sent home on Monday.   Let’s encourage each other to be active and healthy! See the video for more information about our at school and at home challenges for the month. https://youtu.be/bvVI4kMnXG4

Hello Families, I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Here are a few things we got up last week! We reviewed the letters W, Y, Z and Q as well as worked with the vowel team I (ie, igh, y, y_e). There is just one letter left to review. We will be starting up our Words Their Way program shortly! We also worked on writing how writing can be used to communicate meaning by writing out instructions on how to carve a pumpkin using the words first , next, then and last/finally as sentence starters. The students used the 'I can' statements of 'I can use my knowledge of letters and sounds to attempt to spell words.' (Grade 1) OR 'I can capitalize  the first word of a sentence and include punctuation at the end of a sentence.' (Grade 2) On Monday we will see if they wrote out the correct steps for us to carve a class pumpkin! We are beginning to understand our Daily LA routine more and more each week. The Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students

Hello Families, We began the week taking advantage of the beautiful weather by learning about what a Sit Spot is. We enjoyed time in the garden exploring what we could see or hear from our sit spot and drew in our visual journals. We enjoyed our third session with Ms. Sharon, our Artist in Residence. We learned about thin and thick lines and added each to our art in progess. We can't wait to see what our final product looks like! In Science we explored the Colour Wheel. We used the Primary Colours to mix and create our own colours. Creating names for our colours is our next step! Math  We have begun exploring quantities in a variety of ways including numerals, pictures, base 10 and 10 frames.  Grade 1s are working within numbers to 100 and Grade 2s are working within numbers to 1000.  Our learning will continue over the next couple of weeks, challenging us to represent numbers in even more ways - number lines, expanded form, number bonds and more!  Upcoming Dates: October 28 Non-I

Students will be sharing about their ancestry with the class to gain an understanding of their “self”. Along with this questionnaire, please send an artifact to school for your child to share with the class. Artifacts will be for “eyes only” unless it is given permission to be passed around. Halloween

Halloween   Halloween is Monday, October 31st. Students are invited to wear Halloween costumes if they would like. We remind all students that there is no gore, no masks and no weapons.  Students should come with their costumes on. Please ensure that costumes are comfortable to be worn throughout the day and will be safe and suitable for all daily activities such as gym, recess and learning time. Inflatable costumes are challenging for students to work in throughout the day. We are asking that grade 1/2 students do not wear inflatable costumes. In keeping with nutrition and health protocols, we ask for no additional treats or snacks to be sent in.   The parade is BACK!  We are so happy to welcome families back to the school for our Halloween parade. The gym will be set up for costume viewing. Our parade will start at 1:00 and students will wander through the gym to showcase their costumes. If you would like to join us, please come to the front door and join us in the gym for 1:00.  P

Hello Families, Sorry for the delay in posting! Here is what we got up to last week. We began our work with Artist in Residence, Sharon Fortowsky and are using books by Perter Reynolds as our inspiration. The students learned different painting techniques such as dry on wet, wet on wet and blending aka 'bleeding'. Playing with how much 'colour or pigment' on their brush allowed them to experiment with how deep or light they wanted each colour they used to be. We have two more sessions with Ms. Sharon to learn more incredible ways to paint! In Math we continued to work on our ability to represent a given number with the grade 2's guiding the grade 1's. They helped to locate different materials within our own classroom that could show each number in different ways. We have begun completing Esti Mysteries together as a class to practice our estimation and reasoning skills.  We are learning how to Listen to Reading via the Epic app on iPads that we have in our class

Hello Families, Happy Thanksgiving Weekend! I hope you all have a wonderful weekend! Here are a few things we accomplished this week. We read 'Fall Mix Up' and used our senses to brainstorm our own ideas of what we can see, hear, feel, smell and taste in Fall. Students were asked to draw each of their ideas and then use sound knowledge to label each illustration.  With it being Thanksgiving this weekend, the students listened to books about being thankful. We had a sharing circle about what each of us is thankful for and then transferred this into our writing. Students were asked to write as much as they could or to complete the sentence starter from the board-'I am thankful for.' We also continued to review our letters and sounds-Cc, Gg, Dd and Ee. Ask your child what action goes with each letter and sound!  Library We visited the Library this week and were able to sign out 1 or 2 books. Some chose to bring these books home or leave them at school. We will have library

Hi Families, It was a busy short week here in Room 13! Truth and Reconciliation We spent much time this week learning about what Truth and Reconciliation is, focusing on how we matter and how others can matter too. We created our own list of wishes for children, if we wish it for ourselves, we can wish the same for others. The students then wrote how they matter, ask your child how they matter in our world! In literacy this week, we reviewed O, N, B and vowel team ai, ay, a_e. We also practiced our read to self and buddy reading. We will be learning about listen to reading in the coming weeks.  If you are able, please send headphones for your child to use at school.  They will be kept in their cubby to use during listen to reading time.  In Math we continued to explore patterns using different attributes such as: colour shape picture direction size position Create patterns using materials at home such as lego or blocks to have your child show you a pattern using an attribute other tha
