 Hello Families,

I hope you had a fabulous weekend. Here are a few things we got up last week!

We reviewed the letters W, Y, Z and Q as well as worked with the vowel team I (ie, igh, y, y_e). There is just one letter left to review. We will be starting up our Words Their Way program shortly!

We also worked on writing how writing can be used to communicate meaning by writing out instructions on how to carve a pumpkin using the words first, next, then and last/finally as sentence starters. The students used the 'I can' statements of 'I can use my knowledge of letters and sounds to attempt to spell words.' (Grade 1) OR 'I can capitalize the first word of a sentence and include punctuation at the end of a sentence.' (Grade 2) On Monday we will see if they wrote out the correct steps for us to carve a class pumpkin!

We are beginning to understand our Daily LA routine more and more each week. The Listen to Reading station can be quite distracting for other students if headphones aren't used. If you are able to send headphones for your child to keep in their cubby at school, that would be very helpful.

In Math we continue to learn how numbers can be represented symbolically. This week we learned about tally marks. First we practiced on white boards together as a class while rolling a virtual dice up to 10. Then we progressed to rolling our own dice or two to represent numbers in our workbooks. I was very impressed with how well everyone did with Tally marks!

In Science we continued to explore the colours we created through mixing the primary colours by giving them creative names! Ask your child what kinds of names they came up with. We also continue to discuss Fall and seasonal changes.

Soft Entry

Our "soft entry" time is from 8:00-8:10am. Our instructional time begins at 8:10am when attendance is taken and our morning meeting time begins. It is really important for students to arrive at school on time so they understand what to do in the morning and can participate in our morning routine and morning work. Our Halloween activities will begin first thing on Monday morning!
