Hello Families! It was wonderful to see so many of you at the Open House on Thursday. The students took a lot of pride getting our space ready for you. Here is one of the displays up in our grade 1/2 hallway. A collaborative art piece to celebrate Dot Day.  We had a busy week of learning. We reviewed the letters A, I, M, S, T as well as the letter P using the Animated Literacy program. Each letter/sound has an action and a character, ask you child to tell  and show you the sound for each one. After brainstorming different words that begin with each letter, the students are asked to illustrate  write words that start with these letters. Students are encouraged to slowly stretch out the sounds of the word and write what they hear. As a challenge, students can write a sentence that corresponds with each picture! In Math we continued to explore patterns, where we find them in nature and how they are in the cycles of life every day. Repeating patterns are all around us! Students were asked

Hi Families, We had a great full week of school in Room 13! We can't wait to share our space with you at the Open House next week.  Dot Day On Thursday it was International Dot Day. This day is inspired by Peter H. Reynold's book "The Dot" which celebrates creativity. All. grade 1/2 classes participated in a collaborative dot art project which you can see on display in the hallway on Thursday evening during the Open House.                                                   Math Patterns We continue to explore patterns. We looked at what kids of attributes patterns can have, where we see patterns in our world as well as in Nature.  We explored this during our work period with  Nomenclature cards and sketching techniques.  Ask your child what kinds of patterns they can find on a calendar or in your own backyard!  Dates Monday, September 19th - Brown Envelopes Due  Wednesday, September 21st - Peace Day Wednesday, September 21st - Terry Fox Run  Thursday, September 22nd -

Hello Families, We had a great week learning routines and all about each other.  Circles represent the interconnectedness of all beings, of the cycle of life and the seasons. Each morning we begin our day with circle to learn about each other and how to listen while others are sharing. We have been passing around a talking 'flower' to ensure that we understand when it is our turn to share. We are looking forward to learning more about each other to compare our similarities and differences. In Math we reviewed and learned about repeating patterns as well as pattern rules and the different attributes that can be used. We built patterns using various materials and coloured chosen ones as well.  We also learned a new math game called 'Make 10' with a deck of cards. If you have a deck of cards, ask your child to show you how. It was amazing to see how fast the students caught on to this game and how engaged they were while playing it!  To show care for our space, we brainsto

Hello families! We had a great start to the school year this week! Students enjoyed getting to know each other and slowly getting back into the routine of school. We learned a lot about classroom routines and materials and are easing into school work. Students enjoyed some reading time, playing games in the gym, building and free choice time on Friday. Soft Entry On Tuesday, teachers will be outside to meet students in the morning from 8:00-8:10. Starting on Wednesday morning, we will begin our soft entry in the morning. When students arrive at school they will come in the doors near the garden and will make their way down to the classroom. Doors will be open from 8:00-8:10. Students will be engaged in a morning activity and instructional time will begin at 8:10am. If you are late, please go to the front doors instead.  Placemats During snack time students will be using placemats in their space as part of our Montessori practical-life learning. Our laminated placemats don't hol
