Sorry for the delay, forgot to take photos of the work from last week so the blog was delayed until today.

We began to learn about the 7 Sacred Teachings this week. Ms. Scotton taught us about two of them: Love and Respect. Below are photos of the anchor charts that have the students ideas as well as a few examples of their work. Ask your child what they wrote about in their visual journal!






In Math we continue to work on graphing-collecting data, reading data and making our own bar graphs! The students love creating their own questions to ask their peers, they are really learning a lot about each other!

Word Work Groups

In Ms. Greenhall's Word Work Group students have been learning about consonants. This week we reviewed the letters L, J, K, and W using the Animated Literacy actions. We then cut and sorted pictures that start with these letters. Those who finished early tried to spell the items in their pictures and then moved onto a literacy game. Ask your child about the actions and sounds for  L, J, K, and W. 

 In Ms. Lacour's Word Work Group students have been learning about vowels. This week we continued with short "O" and looked at the "OP" and "OT" word families. We then sorted pictures to match the corresponding words. Ask your child about words in the "OP" and "OT" family

In Ms. Midgley's group, we learned about the digraphs 'Th' and 'Wh.' We learned about the two sounds that 'Th' make and learned about the Animated Literacy character The Thick Thorny Thing - ask your child about the action! We also talked about the difference between the 'Th' sound and the 'F' sound as many children mix up these sounds. We talked a lot about proper mouth position and used mirrors to practice the different sounds. We learned that in 'Wh' the h is silent! Students are not expected to know the difference between 'W' and 'Wh' in their writing, but when they are reading we want them to know that they both make the same sound. We learned the Animated Literacy character Whistling Whale - ask your child about the action for this sound! Students have been LOVING the Scratch Garden videos about each digraph. Next week we will review all of the digraphs we've learned.


In Ms. Romanko's word work group some worked with the blend 'pl'. We learned that we can hear both the sounds 'p' and 'l' in the blend and sorted pictures that began with p, l, pl. Another group reviewed vowel patterns in one syllable words in preparation for adding 'ing' to words next week. The third group worked to unscramble paragraphs as well as reading comprehension.

This week in Ms. Gierl & Ms. Green's Common Long Vowel word work groups we learned about "a_e, ai, and ay" words. This was our last week learning about the vowel A so we had a "check in" where we challenged ourselves to apply the spelling patterns we've learned. Teachers read 10 words out loud and the students worked independently to practice and check their accuracy with the patterns "a, a_e, ai, ay." Ask your student which words they got correct and which words they need to keep practicing!

 Hello Families, We had the amazing opportunity to have HAWKS land in our field on Monday. We watched the landing, asked questions, sketched and then watched the helicopter take off! What a great way to start the week. In Science, we have continued our learning about different animals, focusing on what they each, where they live, what they look like and finding out interesting facts. The students have begun to create their own booklets or posters to share their information gathered with their peers. In Math, we have been focusing on shapes and being able to describe their attributes. The students created Wanted posters to share their knowledge of 2D shapes and 3D objects. With the new Wellness Curriculum, we discussed Boundaries and how to communicate them as well as who is in our Relationship circles as Family, friends and acquaintances in our lives.  Hello Families, 30 x 30 Outdoor Challenge We continued to enjoy our time outside this week. Whether is was with our grade 3 buddies or on our own, we were able to get outside every day! We even cleaned up the perimeter of the field one morning. We will continue to be going outside everyday. We do ask you to put sunscreen or bug spray on your child before they come to school. If you are sending it for them to put on, please ensure they know how to do it themselves and that they know not to share with others. Thank you! Math Fractions have been a big part of our lessons these past two weeks and wow, did the students ever pick up on what a fraction was! Learning terms such as numerator, denominator, whole, part, partition, equal and unequal helped them complete their pizza fractions and name fractions with ease! Here are a few examples.   Hello families! We had a great start to the school year this week! Students enjoyed getting to know each other and slowly getting back into the routine of school. We learned a lot about classroom routines and materials and are easing into school work. Students enjoyed some reading time, playing games in the gym, building and free choice time on Friday. Soft Entry On Tuesday, teachers will be outside to meet students in the morning from 8:00-8:10. Starting on Wednesday morning, we will begin our soft entry in the morning. When students arrive at school they will come in the doors near the garden and will make their way down to the classroom. Doors will be open from 8:00-8:10. Students will be engaged in a morning activity and instructional time will begin at 8:10am.
